Decoration Exploration: Cindy Gibson Workshop

Cindy Gibson is known for her vibrantly decorated, high-fire porcelain and stoneware. Cindy views each platter or teapot as a canvas. She says, “I love pattern; I love colour; I love painting and I love clay.” Examples of her work include a 2.5 litre teapot depicting medieval musicians in vivid blue and gold, and “The Islands” platter, where ferries, sail boats, forests and mountains spiral into a whimsical whirlpool. A master of ceramic tiles, Cindy designed a mural for a 16th English country home that features 1,000 individually shaped pieces,

Cindy studied ceramics at the University of Manitoba. She works out of her Belle and Dragon Pottery in Victoria.

Workshop description:Cindy demonstrates surface decoration techniques on soft, leather-hard, greenware and bisque pieces. Techniques include “saral paper”, a wax free graphite transfer paper; “spons” – a traditional technique using a “spon” or “pricked stencil” to produce a repeating design; underglaze pens, pencils and chalks; and slip bulbs.

Day One includes a slide show and demonstrations.

Day Two is hands-on – participants try out decorative techniques on their own work. Cindy warns, “It’s important that people know this is an experimental day - not to bring their masterpieces!”

Workshop participants: maximum 20

Registration is limited to Salt Spring Potters Guild members until our first meeting in December.

After Dec. 2, 2011 registration is open to potters across BC.

Our workshops usually sell out, so please sign up early to avoid disappointment. We accept post-dated cheques.

Registration and cancellation:

No phone calls accepted to hold a place. Your delivered cheque is the only way to register. Money will be fully refunded up to four weeks before the workshop. After that if a registered participant wants to cancel they will need to find a replacement, as no refund will be issued.

What to bring:About 12 tiles or pots to work on: 3 bisque, 3 dry greenware, 3 leather hard and 3 soft leather hard. You can bring more or fewer pieces depending on how experimental you feel. Please bring your favourite carving tools, brushes and stamps.

Potluck Saturday February 18: Everyone is welcome, even if you don’t attend the workshop. We’ll work out a time and place closer
